If you had told me when I started university that I would one day become a Chartered Accountant and run my own accountancy practice, I probably wouldn't have believed you.
My academic journey actually began in science. I studied Infectious Diseases at undergraduate level, before going on to complete a Master's in Global Health and Public Policy — both at Edinburgh University. I've always been interested in understanding how things work, solving problems and looking beyond the obvious qualities that, perhaps unexpectedly, have followed me throughout my career in finance.
After university, I joined PwC on a graduate scheme, beginning my career in audit and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with ICAS. That experience gave me strong technical foundations and the opportunity to understand businesses from the inside out.
I subsequently moved into industry, where I spent several years working across finance roles before becoming a Financial Controller. Much of my career has involved improving month-end reporting, strengthening financial controls, building better processes and finding ways to remove unnecessary manual work. I became particularly interested in the systems behind the numbers because a good finance function shouldn't simply tell you what happened; it should help you understand your business and make better decisions about what happens next.
That experience eventually led me to establish Mera Accounting.
Mera is about bringing that Financial Controller mindset to growing businesses. Combining solid accounting with better systems, clearer management information and practical financial support.
Away from spreadsheets and Xero, there is considerably more to my life!
I'm happily married and a proud dad to three children, and family is a huge part of who I am.
I'm also a bit of an enthusiast. I love watches, cars and music, and I can happily spend far too much time learning about all three. Whether it's the engineering behind a mechanical watch, a great car, or sitting down and properly listening to an album, I appreciate things that have been thoughtfully designed and built well.
Perhaps that's also why I've always enjoyed improving businesses and finance functions. I like understanding how all the pieces fit together and then finding a better way of doing things.
Through this blog, I want to share some of what I've learned throughout my career, alongside practical thoughts on business, finance, accounting, systems, property and entrepreneurship.
And occasionally, perhaps, a watch or car might sneak in too.
